On this episode of DLEW, I talk with San Francisco-based dance artist Katerina Wong.
From her degree in anthropology to how she thinks about her audiences, Katie has an incredible and unique approach to her work. Join us on this episode for a peek into Katie’s brain, her life and travels, and her creative process.
Katerina Wong (Katie) is a native of New Jersey but has been a part of the San Francisco dance community since 2012. She graduated cum laude from Princeton University with a degree in Anthropology and a minor in East Asian Studies and Dance.
After college, Katie moved to Beijing as a Princeton-in-Asia Teaching Fellow with a post at China Foreign Affairs University. While there, she had the opportunity to assistant-direct the Future Dance Ensemble of Peking University and launch a series of dance workshops for the Migrant Children’s Foundation.
Since relocating to San Francisco, she has had the pleasure of dancing with RAWdance, Printz Dance Project, LEVYdance, Concept o4, PUSH Dance Company, Bellwether Dance Project, Sculpted Motion, Blind Tiger Society, Project Tremolo, ka-nei-see | collective, and Ziru Dance. Katie was selected as FACT/SF’s JuMP Commissioned Choreographer in 2016 and presented her first evening length production entitled “Speck”. Described as an “impressive feat” and “fiercely physicalized” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Katerina’s work has been presented at Z Space, ODC Theater, CounterPulse, Dance Mission Theater, Joe Goode Annex, Fort Mason, PianoFight, The Cutting Ball Theater, California Academy of Sciences and more.
