On this episode of DLEW, I talk with Sumi Clements and Taryn Vander Hoop, co-founders of Summation Dance.
The early days of a dance company are some of the most difficult – and most confusing. Join us as Sumi and Taryn share their process, tips, and tricks from the beginning of Summation Dance to now.
Sumi Clements received her BFA in Dance from the University of California at Santa Barbara where she was the recipient of the Patricia Sparrow Scholarship & Corwin Award for Choreography. She subsequently moved to New York where she was a member of Peter Kyle Dance and involved in various projects around the city before returning to study at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Upon receiving her MFA in Dance Performance and Choreography, she went on to co-found the NYC-based Summation Dance, showing work at BAM, Jacob’s Pillow, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Judson Memorial Church, Danspace at St. Mark’s Church, the 92nd St Y, Baruch College, La Mama, FlicFest at the Irondale Center, Dance New Amsterdam and ZSpace, among others. Sumi Clements currently dances for Crossman Dans(c)e, has worked with Gerald Casel Dance Company, and has performed in the works of Doug Varone, Alwin Nikolais, Kyle Abraham, Andrea Miller and Sydney Skybetter. Sumi splits her time between NYC and Denver, CO, where she is an artist-in-residence at the Colorado Conservatory of Dance, and on faculty at Boulder Jazz Dance Workshop during the summers. http://summationdance.org/
Taryn is originally from Wisconsin where she received her BS in Dance, English Literature, and Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has shown her own choreography at BAC, Danspace at St. Mark’s Church, Judson Memorial Church, and Peridance. With Summation, Taryn has toured nationally, choreographed and facilitated large-scale movement choirs, and taught master classes and set repertory at universities across the country. She has also been involved in projects with GERALD CASEL DANCE and Laura Peterson Choreography and performed the works of Andrea Miller/Gallim Dance and Sydney Skybetter/skybetter & associates. Taryn is a Part-Time Lecturer in the dance department at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and teaches vinyasa yoga teacher trainings in NYC, New Jersey, and Asia through Om Factory Yoga Center.
